The water heater is an absolute superstar. The system works 24/7, seven days a week. It doesn't take a lunch break and it does not get an overnight rest to recover. To ensure that your system continues to provide the best service, it is important to have it serviced regularly. How often should you service your hot water heater?

How long does a typical hot water system last?

In Australia, a hot water unit has an average lifespan between 8-12. Think about it, even if you keep your car for less time, you still service it regularly. Why should your hot water system be any different?

How often should my hot water heater be serviced?

You should consider the way you use your system and the type you have when determining the frequency of service. These are only rough guidelines for storage systems. You should consult your local professional to determine if you need to have your hot water heater serviced more frequently than usual.

Domestic hot water heaters should be serviced every 12 months
Commercial hot water heaters should be serviced every 12 months
Every 12 months, industrial hot water heaters should be serviced

You should service your water heater every six months if you live in a hardwater area. Refer to the manual of your water heater for brand and model specific advice.

What services should be included in a hot-water unit?

If you need a hot-water system service completed, you should contact a licensed plumber or gas fitter.

Checking for anodes (if you have a solar or electric hot water system).
Gas pressure check
Burner pressure check
Checking your thermostat
Valve check
Checking the heat jacket and cylinder for signs of corrosion or leaks
Cleaning the system
Check the overall soundness of your system with a general once-over

Anodes in solar and electric hot water heaters need to be replaced every five years. The thermostat should also be changed every three to five years. When you think that your service will be due soon, ask your plumber to replace the anode and thermostat while they complete your service.

Why should I service my hot water system?

You should have your hot-water system regularly serviced for many reasons, including:

Safety! Safety!
It helps to extend the life of your hot-water system
Reduces energy costs by allowing your unit to run more efficiently
Increased reliability of your system
Reduction in the need for repairs

How can you tell if your water heater needs to be serviced?

Water heaters can give off a variety of signs that indicate it's time to service it or replace it. The signs can range from water leaking out of the system, the pilot light going out frequently to the constant change in water temperature. It is recommended that you call your local professional if something is wrong with your system. They will be able decipher the problem and solve it quickly and efficiently. You can certainly look at your system, but a professional will likely be able to solve the issue much more quickly and efficiently than you.

What is the maintenance of hot water systems?

Many people mistakenly believe that maintenance and servicing are the same thing. However, there are some differences. It is essential to maintain the hot water system in order to keep it working optimally. It is important to check the temperature and pressure release valve (the TPR) at least every four months, and your system for any cracks about every four weeks. You should also flush your system every six months to remove any dirt, minerals, or sediment. This will also help extend the life span of your hot water unit.
